Thorsby Cattle Penning

Janet Taylor is a competitor. Janet and her horse Scooter attend 20-plus rodeos a year when she’s not looking after her children, horses and working at Barrhead’s ATB Financial branch.

For Janet, emotion and competition combine every May at the Friends to the Max team penning event in Thorsby. The women-only event – held in honour of Taylor’s good friend, Maxine, who died of breast cancer – features teams of three cowgirls who pen three calves in less than two minutes. The competition, combined with a huge silent auction, has raised more than $212,000 to help create a future without breast cancer. ATB’s a proud donor to the cause, and Thorsby branch associates come out to cheer Janet on.

“The event means so much to the participants,” says Janet, whose daughter, Brittany, has been in remission from breast cancer for two years. “Everyone is here for a reason and you can see it on their faces.”
