ATB Financial has unveiled a new community-building program for Calgary and southern Alberta, using LEDs on one of this city’s landmarks to light up the stories we share.
In a partnership with the Calgary Stampeders Football Club and the University of Calgary, ATB has installed thousands of programmable coloured lights on the Crowchild Trail side of McMahon Stadium.
The initiative is called ATBLightsYYC. The hashtag is #ATBLightsYYC.
On big game nights, the lights can be set to the home-team colours of the Stamps, the Flames, or the Dinos. The building can also be programmed to do everything from glow in red and white on Canada Day to get scary for Halloween to sparkle in colour for Pride.
Two giant video screens on the stadium complete the new way building can share its message with people passing by.
“These lights and those reader boards let ATB turn the outside of a stadium into a way to celebrate the spirit inside the causes and charities that our communities are dedicated to,” said ATB Vice-President, Community Initiatives, John Windwick.
Windwick said the lights belong to smaller and lesser known organizations as much the better known groups.
“There’s a wide spectrum of events and causes that deserve more time in the spotlight, and this is our way of trying to help,” he said. “We want to hear from those groups and we want to tell their stories in light.”
The lights have already been doing their work. On November 13, the LEDs went blue, white and red in honour of victims in the Paris attacks. And, then, they were programmed in the official colours of the province, blue and gold, to recognize the public service of Manmeet Bhullar, the Calgary-Greenway MLA killed in a highway accident on November 23.
To request ATB’s lights on the stadium be programmed to particular colours, we invite community groups to apply here. See terms of application below.
ATB Financial has sole discretion over what lightings are approved and not approved.
The applicant/contact on the original application will be contacted when the application is approved.
ATB Financial is under no obligation to provide specific feedback to any individual or organization regarding the status, merit and/or denial of its application.
There are further restrictions around the use of LED lights and digital boards as part of the partnership between ATB Financial, the Calgary Stampeders and the University of Calgary, and rules concerning religious holidays and figures.
ATB Financial does not light McMahon Stadium for political campaigns or for personal events.
